The small market town of West Malling is one of the most beautiful locations. Whether you plan to spend the weekend and sleep in hotels in West Malling or just a few hours, there are some exceptional destinations throughout the city you don’t want to miss. Quaint, charming, and full of interesting history and natural beauty, there’s no limit to what you can find and fall in love with here.
Explore the Park
Manor Park Country Park is one of the best reasons to visit for outdoor lovers. This park spans 52 acres and was once the private gardens of Douce Manor. The Kent County Council purchased the grounds in 1973, and they have flourished since. Today, it’s an open public space, the perfect place to walk along the waterways, watch the birds, and just relax.
Dine in Style and Elegance
As you explore the parks and shops here, you’ll probably want to stop in for a wonderful, filling meal. When looking for a restaurant in West Malling, you do have several options. St. Leonard’s is one of the best choices in dining, whether you’re stopping in for Sunday lunch or a steak night out on the town. If you’re after just a few drinks and some lively conversation, stop at The Malling Jug. There’s sure to be a real ale here perfect for quenching your taste buds.
Plan a Visit to the Market
If you’re lucky enough to visit on the fourth Sunday of the month, plan to stop in at the West Malling Farmers’ Market. It’s located along the main street. This market offers fresh produce and many handmaid items. It follows a tradition that’s been in place since Roman times, too. It’s a fun place to visit, even if you want to sample some treats.
Take in History
St. Leonard’s Tower is one of the most notable structures in the area. Dating to the 11th century, this stunning natural sandstone building is worthy of exploration. It’s typically not available for interior tours for safety concerns, but many come to explore the grounds and take in the natural surroundings. Other structures nearby are just as impressive, including the Coldrum Long Barrow, over 3000 years old, and St. Mary’s Church, located right in the centre of town.
Enjoy a Game of Golf
The West Malling Golf Club is one of the treasures here. This Par 70 Spitfire course provides a fantastic level of gameplay. Several other golf courses are nearby, including King’s Hill and Wrotham Heath. No matter which you visit, you’ll love just how well-maintained they are. If golf is not something you want to spend time doing, try a game of cricket instead. Cricket matches happen every Saturday during the summer season, and, as the city is noted for being the location of the first recorded cricket match, it’s a must to stop in and explore it.
In addition to these things to do in West Malling, there are numerous shops, twisting and turning historically rich streets to explore, and plenty of friendly people to chat with during your visit.
