Sundays in West Malling, Kent, are an absolute treat. This picturesque market town is a welcoming hub, where charming streets lined with attractive buildings house everything from specialist jewellers to artisan cafés. It’s the perfect place to spend a relaxing day, and we at St. Leonard’s invite you to make our restaurant a part of your Sunday experience.
Start your day with a leisurely stroll around the town. There are so many delightful independent shops to explore, including Coco & Bloom, a wonderful local florist offering seasonal blooms and unique floral arrangements, and Down Swan Street, a treasure trove of thoughtful gifts. These locally owned businesses are perfect for discovering something special, whether you’re picking up a gift or simply treating yourself.
For those who love fresh, local produce, we recommend visiting the West Malling Farmers’ Market, held on the 4th Sunday of each month. You’ll find a variety of artisan produce, from fresh vegetables to homemade treats, and the chance to chat with local producers who are passionate about their products. It’s a fantastic way to experience the town’s culinary delights and support the community.
Once you’ve explored the town, take some time to enjoy the beauty of Manor Park, a stunning 52-acre country park. Originally part of an 18th-century estate, the park offers a variety of natural habitats to explore, from wildflower meadows to serene lakesides and woodland copses. The park is dog-friendly, with plenty of flat trails for walking, as well as benches where you can relax and take in the views. There’s also a children’s play area and a café, making it a perfect spot for families to spend time together.
If you’re interested in history, don’t miss the chance to visit St. Leonard’s Tower, the ancient remains of a 11th or 12th-century structure that sits on a sandstone ledge on the southwestern edge of the town. While the tower’s exact history is still a mystery, its location and striking features make it an intriguing site to visit, and it’s a great spot for photography.
Another must-see in West Malling is The Cascades at Malling Abbey. Nestled opposite our restaurant on Swan Street, and the inspiration behind the naming of one of our private dining rooms, this 900-year-old abbey was founded in 1090 by the Norman monk-bishop Gundulf of Rochester and continues to be home to a community of Benedictine nuns. While the abbey’s Norman, Medieval, Tudor, and Georgian structures are impressive, there’s another hidden gem within its grounds—the picturesque water cascade. Although its exact age is unknown, a watercolour by the famous artist J.M.W. Turner, painted in the 1790s, depicts the abbey and cascade, suggesting it may have been around for centuries. Its tranquil beauty makes it a perfect spot for reflection during your visit.
